Among the most charming features of Tuscany, Italy are the tiny villages dotting the hillsides among the vineyards and olive trees. Such a village is often referred to as a "borgo", a word that means "hamlet" and especially a hamlet (or part of a town) consisting of a single street. These Tuscan hamlets have existed since mediaeval times and probably earlier, but a great many were built during the 18 C and 19 C as agriculture spread through the formerly forested area between Florence and Siena now known as Chianti. They consist of a larger house that belonged to the landowner or more often the farm agent, surrounded by smaller structures that were the houses for farm workers, haysheds, wine-making facilities, olive oil press and so on.
Castellinuzza, located high in the Chianti hills on the road from Greve in Chianti to Lamole, is exactly such a borgo. It is still the location of two wineries where wine and olive oil can be bought, and is surrounded on every side by vineyards and olive orchards. The few houses are mostly occupied by six families of local people who own and work the land, but one house, Casa Allinuzza, has been restored as a Tuscan vacation rental. Castellinuzza is an ideal location for your holiday in Tuscany. It is high up and hence cool in summer, tranquil and the few vehicles belong to the farmers so that children may safely run free. Castellinuzza is 3 km from the village of Lamole. Greve in Chianti (6 km) and Panzano in Chianti (11 km) are on the famous Via Chiantigiana, the road running from Florence to Siena, both of which are about one hour by car from Castellinuzza.
